In early time of the Republic of China, although lots of feudal folk customs had been abolished, but after many celebrities passed away, their families still chose complex funeral obsequies. On December 28thin 1919, Feng Guozhang died of diseases in Maoer lane of Beijing, his funeral was fairly magnificent, and his mourning hall was arranged in Taihe Gate of the Palace Museum.
In 1922, the funeral of General Commander Jiang Guiti was also fairly magnificent. During his funeral period, numerous people constantly went to condolence, and the funeral music was playing all the time, the firecrackers also constantly were lighted up. Moreover, elegiac couplets were more than ten thousand. Besides, there were three tents of Buddhist monks, Buddhist nuns and Taoism priests. The religious rite was quite grand, and the funeral lasted for nearly fifty days before going to his hometown Bozhou of Anhui province. The coffin was carried from Cuihua lane toward East, to Dongsi Archway, Dongdan Archway, out of ChongWen Gate, to Dongbian Gate, through Qianmen Street and finally Western Station. Since the funeral of Jiang was quite magnificent, there were lots of people going to watch the funeral, and the government had to dispatch lots of soldiers to keep order along the street.
