马王，即马神，一般俗称马王爷，全名叫“水草马明王”，是中国民间信奉的神仙之一，传说长有三只眼。马王爷的画像，四臂三目，狰狞可怖。农历六月二十三日是马王爷的生日。这一天，凡是与马驴骡相关的行业都要祭祀马王。据说马王爷是一个回教徒，祭祀的时候都用羊肉。北京历史上有很多马神庙，也有很多与马神庙相关的地名，可见北京人对马王爷的信奉程度。
