In the early time of Beijing, wheelbarrow was the major means of transportation. Later on,"rickshaw"gradually came into being and became popular. At the beginning, rickshaw was made of wooden wheels. Therefore it was fairly jolting and few people would like to seat on it. Later on, craftsmen replaced the wooden wheels with rubber ones. The upgraded rickshaw became more comfortable. At the entrance of large lanes, the clusters of carters lined up waiting for business. The first time customer had to tell where he or she would like to go. The cart owners calculated the distance and gave a price. It was up to the customer to make a choice. The regular customer would go to the regular cart owner and nobody would compete with him.
